INTRODUCING SHEKOU SDG SUMMIT
"EMPATHY TO IMPACT"

Calling All Teacher, Leaders, Community Members!

Shekou SDG Summit is the first  gathering for schools from throughout the region, to build capacity, connect, and create meaningful connections to the UN's global goals. Hosted by Shekou International School and International School Services, the summit encourages schools to send small groups of teachers and leaders to come and participate in a two-day workshop, designed to create a community that expands what is possible in education, service, and community.

STEVE SOSTAK

Following 15 years teaching elementary and middle school on three continents, Steve now specializes in embedding empathy, global competence, and UN SDG targets into whole schools and classrooms that empower students to make local and global community impact. He prepares administrative teams and K-12 teachers to incorporate global competence into project-based learning, curriculum and lesson plans, remaining sensitive to standards, criteria, competencies, language objectives, and tools for effective and efficient planning, feedback, and assessments. As a global TeachSDGs ambassador, Steve is also lead facilitator for the Inspire Citizens' student programs: 17 Skills for 17 Goals and Global Youth Media.

AARON MONIZ

After being the teacher team leader for the innovative ISB Futures Academy in Beijing and now a global TeachSDGs ambassador, Aaron now envisions education as empowering students to desire active citizenship in our world, equipped with knowledge, skills, and perspectives that will contribute to a sustainable future and counter social inequality and environmental degradation. Through providing teachers and students with effective systems thinking frameworks and tools such as media literacy strategies and action planning in project-based environments, he strives to help schools, students, and communities be change agents to positively impact our world.

GETTING HERE

Flights To Either or Hong Kong(HKA)

  1. Shenzhen(SZX):  Shenzhen's modern styled airport is the most convenient port of entry and is a short, 45-minute taxi ride from the airport to Shekou.

  2. Hong Kong(HKA):  The most flights from the most places--choosing this airport allows you to cross into mainland through the ferry or by taxi/van at the Shenzhen Wan borders.

For Your Stay

Shekou is a very expatriate friendly neighborhood in Shenzhen.  The hub of Shekou is Sea World, which is the entertainment and dining center of the city, featuring incredible restaurants and nightlife. The Shekou boardwalk runs the length of the ocean front and connects to a 50km long waterfront development that hugs the bay.  Nanshan mountain overlooks the city and offers trails and observation points for those seeking exercise and bit of nature.

TWO-DAY SUMMIT GOALS

BUILDING CAPACITY

Teachers and school leaders, will have the opportunity to expand their awareness and understanding of Sustainable Development Goals, and the meaningful way they can be incorporated into school culture, curriculum, and community.

POWERFUL PRACTITIONERS

Educators, Curriculum Leaders, Administrators, and Students, will be presenting examples of meaningful impact. Participants will have the opportunity to meet and learn from committed practitioner from South China and beyond.

CREATING A COMMUNITY

A critical goal of the Summit is to create a lasting community and network of organizations that continue to support and share with each other, well beyond the summit, itself. There will be a combination of schools, NGO's, vendors, community service partners, and disciplinary experts, to connect with. A digital platform will allow for continued connection.
